-- Nelson Mandela
by Nancy Birmbaum-Gerber
We often lose sight of this universal truth in the whirlwind of our daily lives. Indeed, our popular culture supports -- and even celebrates -- negativity, superficiality, mediocrity, deception, selfishness and greed. Just look at the majority of today's most popular movies, books, music "superstars", television and radio shows! We can't directly influence the media moguls. We CAN, however, take charge of what we allow every day to come into -- and remain -- in our lives. What kind of atmosphere do we create for ourselves -- is it peaceful or nerve jangling? Is it really in our best interest to tune in to the same old news broadcasts spotlighting the same old gore and fear every single evening? Do we continue to watch those ridiculous reality shows that make celebrities out of people whose main motivation is to humiliate themselves or others for a big paycheck? Or do we instead take the time to find and play music or read a book that puts us into a more positive frame of mind? With what kind of people do we spend most of our time? Are they polite, thoughtful, supportive, nurturing, respectful? Are we? Do we tolerate those who do not enhance our lives simply because it's too much of an effort to change? Or, do we spend time with events, individuals and ideas that stimulate our thinking and encourage our growth? With so much out of our control these days, it's essential to remember that there are many, many ways we can enhance our outlook, productivity, relationships and development. Just as we make healthy food choices to enhance our physical well-being, it's time to get more conscious about the other categories of essential input. Copyright 2005 by Nancy Birmbaum-Gerber. The Spiritual Cinema Circle Last year, Stephen Simon, producer of more than twenty films including, "What Dreams May Come" (with Robin Williams), and "Somewhere in Time" (with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour) launched "The Spiritual Cinema Circle," a subscription service that provides members with four to five unique films each month on DVD. Ninety-five percent of these films are unavailable elsewhere and many have won multiple film festival awards. Once members have watched the movies, they get to keep the DVD's and are encouraged to share them with family and friends in an effort to spread the inspiration of spiritual cinema. Not only does "The Circle" provide health-enhancing films that make you think, it does something else -- it gives talented filmmakers the encouragement (and audience) they need to make these films, creating a demand for this kind of cinema. If you want to "Make an Impact on Your Input", support this new era in filmmaking -- one that fulfills the desire for depth, meaning, and purpose in today's theaters.
