Things That Really Matter

by James M. Kilts

On a day-to-day basis, there are literally dozens of things in business that seem important. Often in the whir of action, with loads of conflicting advice and mountains of information to sort through, it is difficult to know what matters. Well, after more than thirty years of a full and challenging career, here’s my list of some of the things that have really mattered to me.

  • Growth matters
  • Relationships matter
  • Loyalty matters
  • Small moments matter
  • Timely decisions matter
  • Doing what you enjoy matters
  • Life’s early lessons matter
  • The right team matters
  • Confronting reality matters (Kilts, 2007. p. 293-295).

Coaching Call to Action

Take time this week to get clear on what matters to you. Make a list. Keep it handy. When the activities, projects, and papers are all calling for equal attention remind yourself of your priorities using the new list. Do some things easily fall away? Do some move to the top of the list? Using the list to determine which activities you say yes to helps clear your path for clarity.
