“Success is really about being ready for the good opportunities that come before you. It’s not to have a detailed plan of everything that you’re going to do. You can’t plan innovation or inspiration, but you can be ready for it, and when you see it, you can jump on it.”

Opportunities abound. At least they do for the person who is looking and aware. The more you look for opportunities the more you see. But few people spend much of their time looking. They are content to just take whatever shows up.

To have an opportunity is one thing, to take advantage of it is another. Taking advantage means you get into action. You do something about it, you don’t just observe. A highly successful mentor, from many years ago, taught me to leave ‘white space’ on my calendar. In other words, don’t schedule every minute of my day. He said that many opportunities have a short window and having the time and space to respond quickly was one of the attributes of his success.

And taking advantage of an opportunity is not the same as taking advantage of someone. Just because you are looking for opportunities, and you see one, and you look around and notice that no one else is seeing it, and you then act on it, is not the same as cheating/putting something over on/taking advantage of someone. If your day is spent looking for ways to take advantage of someone (of course no one reading this!), then you will not have the space to look for opportunities.
